LACEMAKERS' EXHIBITION
Mid Downs Lacemakers, created in February 1990, has grown from strength to strength. The group consists of ladies who make all types of lace including English and Continental bobbin lace, as well as needle lace and tatting.
We meet six times a year on the first Saturday on alternate months;

February, April etc, and our venue is at the Age Concern Centre, Clair Hall, in Haywards Heath.
The group has staged lace exhibitions and demonstrations at Sheffield Park and in Ditchling Museum, as well as in local libraries, and has been involved in the Mid Sussex Festival of Arts, and the Arts Gigantic Festival.
We have undertaken several major lacemaking projects, submitting group entries for Lace Guild competitions. The members made the Altar Lace for St Luke’s Chapel when the Princess Royal Hospital was built. We have also made a lace tablecloth to raffle to raise funds for a local hospice. A booklet of the tablecloth patterns is on sale to raise further funds for the hospice.
We run workshops with specialist tutors which enable us to learn new techniques.
We are a very active group and further details about us can be found on www.mid-downs-lacemakers.org.uk

THE PURCELL SINGERS
Performing Rachmaninov’s
Choral Masterpiece
The All Night Vigil,
also known as VESPERS
|
 |
One of London’s leading chamber choirs, The Purcell Singers has performed extensively in prestigious London venues as well as nationwide and overseas, mainly at well-known festivals. At last year’s Brighton Festival, BBC Southern Counties reviewed the Purcell Singers as being ‘glorious, splendiferous and soul enriching in every way….a wonderful 5 star experience’.
The choir’s repertoire is wide, ranging from Gibbons to Tavener, via Bach, Howells, Poulenc, Barber and Britten, and it has developed a particular reputation for championing unusual late romantic works, notably those of the German composer Georg Schumann.
The choir has so far recorded four CDs, including a première disc of works by Georg Schumann for ASV, which was Gramophone Magazine’s Critics’ Choice in January 2002. The choir’s recordings have been frequently broadcast on the radio, and the choir has also appeared on television.
The choir is also active in session work, and has recorded at all the major London studios, including Abbey Road, Air and Angel Studios. The choir’s output includes several discs for film and television and over 40 film trailers that have been used for films including King Kong, War of the Worlds, The Da Vinci Code and The Island. |
