Brighton-born musician, Kate Murdoch, packed her bags and left for Africa after a chance encounter with African musicians at the 1999 Womad world music festival. Since then she has been hypnotising audiences with ‘ilimba’ (thumbharp) melodies and songs from the Wagogo tribal tradition in Tanzania, East Africa.

Biography:

Kate Murdoch specializes in ilimba, a sophisticated thumbharp instrument from Tanzania, East Africa. She has been studying traditional music with the Zawose family of musicians in Tanzania since 1999. Following postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Kate now gives performances and workshops across the UK.

Kate is the founder of Kutulia Music, a new organisation using world music to promote well-being and raise cultural awareness through workshops and performances in education and healthcare settings. Kutulia is a KiSwahili word, which means to be in a state of ease and relaxation, and this name embodies the therapeutic quality of the music.
